Toxopheresis is a specific form of therapeutic apheresis. It is often referred to as double-filtration apheresis. Unlike in a complete plasma exchange, the plasma is not completely discarded and replaced with donor plasma. Instead, it passes through an additional filter and is then largely returned to the body.

First, the cellular components of the blood—such as red and white blood cells and platelets—are separated from the blood plasma.
Second Filtration
